Eagles Baseball Falls to Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. – The Eagles trailed the Hoyas early on and suffered a 14-4 setback at Georgetown University on Wednesday, March 22nd at Shirley Povich Field.

Coppin State baseball falls to 3-12 overall and Georgetown moves to 13-8. The Eagles finished with 12 hits and scored runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Georgetown got off to a fast start with six runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning.

Sophomore infielder Nazier McIlwain tied a season-high with three hits at the plate against the Hoyas. McIlwain leads the Eagles in runs scored, (10), hits (17) and RBIs (11). Senior infielder Bryant Miranda had his second multi hit game of the season going 2-for-4 while knocking in his fourth RBI.

Junior DH Brett Helmbrecht went 2-for-2 for his third multi hit performance of the season and drew a pair of walks. Senior outfielder Clinton Arnold had a pair of hits, junior outfielder Andres Santana scored his ninth run of the season which is second on the Eagles along with an RBI and sophomore catcher Malik White had his first RBI of the season in his third start.

McIlwain and Helmbrecht both had hits in the first inning. McIlwain singled through the right side followed by a single to right center field by Helmbrecht. The Hoyas came up with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning jumping out to an early advantage. They added on three runs in the second inning as Coppin State trailed 9-0.

The Eagles finally got on the board in the third inning with White and Duhay capitalizing off of an error by the Georgetown defense. White reached on an error and then Duhay singled to third, then both runners stole bases. Santana was next to bat and hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field allowing White to score. Next, McIlwain grounded out but recorded an RBI with Duhay scoring CSU's final run of the inning (9-2).

In the fourth inning, Arnold singled to the pitcher and then advanced home on a wild pitch trimming the Hoyas lead to 9-3. Coppin State's final run came in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by Miranda scoring Santana. Santana singled up the middle and advanced to second on a single by McIlwain.

GU ended with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on for a 14-4 win.

Freshman pitcher Joshua Hancock (0-2) made his fourth appearance of the season and went 1.1 innings. Sophomore Devin Rivera Ozuna tossed 4.2 innings picking up a strikeout and junior John P. Bonanca closed out the mid-week battle striking out two batters in 1.0 inning pitched.

Coppin State baseball will open up a three game conference weekend series against the Hornets of Delaware State University beginning on Saturday, March 25th with a double header at noon. The teams are scheduled for a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 26th.
