Women's Basketball Host Hampton in Regular Season Finale Thursday

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State (8-19, 8-7) will play its final regular-season home game on Thursday evening against Hampton (16-12, 10-5). Game time is 5:30 p.m. The Eagles will recognize three women's basketball seniors; Tiara Goode, Vanessa Neal and Keena Samuels.
               
FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON: Junior Oluwaseun Adeniji scored a career-high 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds in a 78-54 road MEAC loss for the Eagles to Hampton. Two Eagles finished in double figure scoring paced by red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas. Lucas had a team-high 13 points, three assists and three rebounds. Lucas went 2-for-3 from three-point range and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. Adeniji led the bench scoring with a career-night scoring 11 points on 4-of-7 shots from the field and three free-throws. She was key for the Eagles in the first half with a team-high six points. Coppin State's bench scored 22 total points.
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • Coppin State is tied for sixth place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings with one game remaining on their schedule. The Eagles host the Pirates of Hampton, the third ranked team in the conference.
  • The Eagles went 4-3 in the month of February including 1-2 record at home in the Physical Education Complex. CSU has an even 4-4 record at home this season with a 4-3 conference record.
  • Most recently, junior forward Candice Beverly recorded her first career double-double at Morgan State with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. That was her second consecutive game with double figure rebounds after grabbing ten at Savannah State.
  • Graduate guard/forward Vanessa Neal scored in double figures in the last two games. She had ten points against Savannah State and ten against Morgan State.
  • Red-shirt junior guard Genesis Lucas ranks second in the MEAC in assist/turnover ratio (1.22), assists (110) and assists per game (4.6). She is third in minutes played per game (35.50) and steals per game (2.46).
 
EAGLES SUFFER ROAD LOSS TO RIVAL MORGAN STATE
Junior Candice Beverly had her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in a 71-42 road loss at Morgan State on Monday. Beverly posted a career-best five made field goals to go along with her 11 points and 13 rebounds. She tied a career-high with three steals and 11 shots attempted. Graduate Vanessa Neal was the other Eagle scoring in double figures finishing with ten points and had CSU's only three-pointer of the night. Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas scored nine points and had a team-high five assists while freshman Chance Graham finished with eight rebounds and four points. The Eagles were forced into 28 turnovers which was their second most this season. Coppin State's point total (42) was their fifth lowest while their one made three-point field goal on nine attempts were both season lows.
 
2017 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SENIOR CLASS
Head Coach DeWayne Burroughs will say good bye to three seniors playing their final game for the Eagles on Thursday. Keena Samuels, Tiara Goode and Vanessa Neal are the lone seniors on the squad. Samuels has played in 103 games making 67 starts. She has scored 837 career points, 234 rebounds and 134 career assists. Neal has played in 50 games making 20 starts, scoring 194 points, 72 rebounds and 49 assists. Goode scored 215 points, 112 rebounds and 13 assists in her one season at Coppin State.

  • Genesis Lucas is 6th in scoring (13.4), second in assists (4.6), second in assist/turnover ratio (1.2), third in minutes played (35.5), 7th in free-throw percentage (.759), third in steals (2.5), 10th in three-point field goal percentage (.296),
  • Keena Samuels is 8th in scoring (12.6), 8th in steals (1.8), 15th in field goal percentage (.344), 12th in free-throw percentage (.712) and 10th in minutes played (32.0).
  • Tiara Goode is 26th in scoring (9.3), 10th in three-point field goal percentage (.296) and fifth in three-point field goal made (18.8)
  • Chance Graham is 5th in rebounding (8.6), 3rd in offensive rebounds (3.3), 7th in defensive rebounds (5.3)
  • Oluwaseun Adeniji is 10th in blocked shots (0.7)
  • Candice Beverly is 12th in blocked shots (0.7)
 
ALL-TIME ASSISTS
Genesis Lucas is currently ranked in fourth place in school history in career assist totals with 322. As a sophomore she dished out 130 and as a freshman 82. Now in her third season she has 110 thus far, just passing No. 5 Sesalie Johnson (283). Shalamar Oakley is next on the list at No. 3 with 326 career assists and former student-athlete Amber Griffin is No. 2 all-time at 370.
 
GRAHAM RECEIVES FIVE MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS
For the fifth time during the 2016-17 season, Coppin State women's basketball freshman center Chance Graham was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, announced on Monday, February 27. The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native recorded her fourth double-double of the season, with 12 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Savannah State on Monday, February 20th. Graham was 5-for-6 (.833) from the floor and added a steal on the defensive side of the ball.
 
LUCAS NAMED MEAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK & COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Red-shirt junior guard Genesis Lucas was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, February 20. and was named College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week. The 5-7 point guard from Brandywine, Maryland averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in helping Coppin State go 2-0 this past week. She hit seven of her 15 3-pointers in those two games, and against South Carolina State, she scored 21 points while grabbing four rebounds, dishing out six assists and grabbing two steals. She also had 19 points, five assists and three steals against Delaware State.
