BALTIMORE, Md. - Coppin State recorded their first triple of the season and stole a season-high three bases against Rider on Monday, March 13
th at the UMBC Softball Stadium. Rider defeated Coppin State in the double header, 6-3 in game one and 6-5 in game two.
The Eagles fall to a 2-16 overall record. Sophomore
Madison Didion (2-8) went 4.0 innings striking out a season-best five batters for the third time this season. Relief pitchers freshman
Cloe' Ochoa and
Arianna Alderete combined for three innings both picking up a strikeout.
Junior catcher
Nicole Ullman recorded the Eagles first triple of the season leading six Eagles that finished with one hit each. CSU had three RBIs by Ullman, freshmen
Patricia Soria and
Shelby Spaziani.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three hits. Freshman outfielder
Haley Bravo singled to the right side and then stole second base. Next, sophomore outfielder
Melanie Benge singled to left field and advanced to second on the late throw followed by an RBI sacrifice fly out by Soria to center field scoring Bravo. Spaziani then brought in the second run of the inning singling through the left side for an RBI scoring Benge.
Rider responded with six runs over the next three innings taking a 6-2 lead after the fifth inning.
In the seventh inning Ullman blasted an RBI triple down the right field line scoring pinch runner
Camille Ochoa. Sophomore infielder
Megan Narvaez singled to short stop for the Eagles final hit of game one. Rider won 6-3.
In game two Coppin State got off to a quick start with a 1-0 advantage after the first inning. Soria singled down the right field line and then Nowak reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore infielder
Cayla Brown RBI doubled to left field scoring Nowak.
Benge had her first hit singling through the left side for Coppin's only hit of the second inning.
The Eagles struck again with three runs in the fourth inning. Bravo led the inning off reaching on a fielding error by Rider and advanced the second. She then went to third on a wild pitch with Benge drawing a walk putting runners on the corners for CSU. Bravo crossed home plate on a wild pitch trimming Rider's lead to 4-2.
Benge made it a one run game (4-3) crossing home on a fielder's choice RBI by
Camille Ochoa. Narvaez tied it up sacrifice flied out to right field scoring
Cloe' Ochoa for the third run of the inning.
In a back-and-forth thriller, Rider came back with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning (6-4). Benge continued her solid day with an RBI single up the middle scoring Bravo, but the Eagles come from behind rally fell short, 6-5.
Benge led the Eagles with two hits in game two and Bravo scored a pair of runs. On the mound Benge went 2.0 innings fanning one batter while relief pitcher sophomore
Dakota Gartrell and Spaziani both tossed two inning striking out two each.
Coppin State returns to the field on Thursday March, 16
th hosting Lafayette College in a double header at home beginning at 2:00 p.m.
