Genesis Lucas posted 20 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals in 40 minutes of action leading Coppin State to a 55-49 road win at Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, February 4
th in the Hytche Center.
The Eagles picked up their second road victory of the season and improved to a 5-16 overall record and to 5-4 in the MEAC. Maryland Eastern Shore drops to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Genesis Lucas recorded her fifth 20+ point performance of the season while notching her third consecutive game in double figure scoring against the Hawks. She made 7-of-17 shots from the field including three three-pointers and a team-best three made free-throws. Graduate
Tiara Goode scored 16 points reaching double-digit scoring for the ninth time this season. Goode made 5-of-7 shots from the field hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers and had six rebounds. Junior
Candice Beverly made a career-high four field goals finishing with nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Junior
Oluwaseun Adeniji added six points from off of the CSU bench and led the Eagles with two blocks.
Beverly anchored the Eagles first half scoring with eight points and Goode followed with seven points. Coppin State carried a 27-24 advantage into the half. CSU led by as many as eight points in the opening quarter and led the entire length of the second quarter.
MDES tied the game (33-33) at the 4:12 mark in the third quarter and went ahead by four over the next two minutes. CSU's Lucas responded with a three-pointer trimming the deficit to one (37-36), but MDES connected on a layup in the final minute of the quarter taking a 39-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Goode's three-pointer tied the game for the second time at 39-39. CSU put the ball in the hands of Lucas as she carried the Eagles to their second MEAC road win. Lucas was the answer in the second half with 14 points and three steals with seven points coming in the fourth quarter. Goode scored nine points in the fourth quarter knocking down both of her shots from three-point territory. With two minutes left in regulation the Eagles stretched their lead to eight points and in the final minute of action were successful converting on all four of their free-throws. Coppin State outscored the Hawks 19-10 in the fourth quarter and held on for a 55-49 win.
Three scored in double figures for Maryland Eastern Shore paced by Moengaroa Subritzky's double-double of ten points and ten rebounds. Shauntesha Bryant finished with ten points and nine rebounds and Tori Morris led the bench scoring with ten points.
The Eagles begin a three game home stretch inside the Physical Education Complex on Monday, February 6
th against North Carolina Central at 5:30 p.m. Coppin State leads the all-time series with NCCU 8-2, including a 63-46 win in their last meeting in Baltimore on Feb. 18, 2016. Then Coppin State will host Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, February 11
th at 2 p.m. and then Delaware State rounds out the home slate on Monday, February 13
th at 5:30 p.m.
