GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Eagles capped the final day of the Pirate Invitational against Virginia and East Carolina on Sunday, February 26
th at the ECU Softball Field. Coppin State went down 8-1 to Virginia and then loss 11-0 to East Carolina.
Coppin State (1-12) combined for a total of six hits led by freshman outfielder
Camille Nowak during the weekend. Nowak recorded her first hits of her career as an Eagle with singles against UVA and ECU. Junior outfielder
Camille Ochoa recorded her first run of the season against UVA while freshman infielder
Patricia Soria tied a season-high with two hits against East Carolina. Freshman
Shelby Spaziani had her first hit of the season and defensively made four assists against Virginia.
Virginia 8, Coppin State 1
Coppin State finished with two hits and scored their only run of the game on a fielding error by the Virginia in the third inning.
Sophomore
Cayla Brown led the second inning off with a single up the middle. In the third inning,
Shelby Spaziani drew a walk to lead off and then sophomore
Hatika James advanced Spaziani to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Junior
Camille Ochoa pinch ran for Spaziani and scored the Eagles only run on a fielding error. Coppin State's final hit happened in the seventh inning with freshman
Camille Nowak singling to center field.
Virginia scored four runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and three runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore pitcher
Madison Didion went 5.1 innings striking out two batters while walking none. Freshman relief pitcher
Arianna Alderete closed the game issuing one strikeout against UVA.
East Carolina 11, Coppin State 0
Coppin State ended the five game Pirate Invitational with a weekend-best four hits against East Carolina. Sophomore
Patricia Soria pounded out a pair of hits while
Camille Nowak and
Shelby Spaziani each had a single base hit.
East Carolina scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second inning and five runs in the third inning.
Camille Nowak had Coppin State's first hit in the second inning singling to the left field.
Patricia Soria had the next hit for the Eagles singling through the left side loading the bases in the third inning. Alderete drew a walk and then sophomore
Megan Narvaez reached on a fielder's choice.
The Eagle third hit was by
Shelby Spaziani in the fourth inning to the pitcher and finally Soria had her second hit of the game singling to second base.
Freshman
Cloe' Ochoa started for the Eagles and then Adrianna Alderete pitched 1.1 innings striking out one ECU batter.
Dakota Gartrell closed out the game going 1.2 innings.
The Eagles return to action on Friday, March 3
rd for a two game series against Lafayette College at home at 2p.m.
