Eagles Win Third in a Row Cruising to 59-47 Win at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman Chance Graham finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds recording her fourth double-double of the year in a 59-47 road win at Savannah State University on Monday, February 20th in Tiger Arena.

Coppin State won their third consecutive game in a row and finished with four players in double figure scoring. The Eagles overall record improved to 8-18 with an 8-6 MEAC record while Savannah State drops to 10-16 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas scored in double-digits for the eighth straight game finishing with 17 points, seven assists and four steals. Lucas went 8-for-19 from the field and made one three-pointer. Senior Keena Samuels followed with 16 points, tied a career-high with eight rebounds and had six assists. Samuels was 6-of-12 from the field, 3-of-5 from the free-throw line and also had one three-point basket.

Freshman Chance Graham made 5-of-6 field goals shooting a team season-high 83-percent from the floor. This was her second straight game with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Graduate Vanessa Neal scored ten points and made a team-high two three-pointers. Junior Candice Beverly had a career night tallying ten rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Her three blocks was a team season-high performance.

The Eagles did a great job defensively holding the Tigers to 26-percent (18-68) shooting from the floor. Both teams went 5-for-9 from the free-throw line and the Coppin State offense shot their second best percentage from the field at 44-percent (25-56).

Lucas scored six points in the first quarter and Neal had five as the Eagles jumped out to a double-digit lead over the Tigers. SSU struggled with only one made basket in the first period while Coppin State went 7-for-12 from the field. The Eagles led 15-3 heading into the second quarter.
The pace picked up in the next period with both teams shooting over 50-percent. Samuels had eight points and both Neal and Lucas added five points each before halftime. Coppin State maintained a double-digit lead and went into halftime ahead, 46-33.

Samuels came out the half and dropped seven points in the third quarter keeping the Eagles in the lead. Coppin State extended their advantage to 18 (45-27) at the 5:25 mark. In the fourth quarter Lucas and Graham combined to score 10-of13 quarter points by Coppin State. The Eagles led the entire way and cruised to a 59-47 road win over Savannah State.

Savannah State was led by Kenyatta Hendrix's 20 points.

The Eagles will play their final road game of the regular season on Monday, February 27th against rival Morgan State University at 5:30 p.m.
