Eagles Rally From Behind For Win at Savannah State, 84-83

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A late offensive rebound and score with three-seconds left in regulation gave Coppin State an 84-83 road victory at Savannah State University on Monday, February 20th in Tiger Arena. The Eagles outscored the Tigers 53-39 in the second half and had five score in double-digits.

Coppin State has won three out of their last four games. The Eagles improve to 8-21 overall and 7-7 in MEAC play while Savannah State drops to 10-16 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

CSU grabbed a season-high 49 rebounds and blocked a season-best seven shots by the Tigers. The Eagles scored 84 points, made 29 field goals, attempting 71 shots, with nine steals which were all the second highest team totals of the season.

Junior Chas Brown recorded his third consecutive game with 12 rebounds and scored 19 points for his third double-double of the season. He tied a season-best in rebounds and marked season-highs in both blocks with four and field goals made with nine. Junior Tre' Thomas scored 15 points scoring in double figures for the 15th time. Thomas went 4-for-10 from three-point territory and 3-for-5 from the charity stripe. Senior Keith Shivers recorded a career-high seven assists and finished with ten points, five rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore Lucian Brownlee set a new career-high scoring 14 points at Savannah State. Brownlee made a career-best 4-of-7 three-pointers sparking Coppin State in the final seven minutes of action.  

Senior Joshua Treadwell was the sixth Eagle this season to finish a game perfect from the free-throw line on five or more attempts. Treadwell made all six of his free-throws finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. This was his 11th time scoring in double figures.

Brown and Thomas carried the Eagles scoring in the first half as Savannah State got off to a hot start hitting eight first half three-pointers. The Tigers shot 40-percent (17-42) from the floor and the Eagles had a slow start at 28-percent (11-38). Brown had ten points with seven rebounds in the first half making five field goals. Thomas followed with eight points draining a pair of three-pointers. The Tigers went ahead by double-digits (26-16) by the 9:56 mark and carried a 44-31 lead into halftime.

Savannah State had their largest lead of the game (65-49) with 8:40 left in the game. From that moment Coppin State's Brown and Brownlee sparked a 25-9 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 75-75.

Four shots from downtown came from Brownlee in a three-minute stretch followed by dunks and layups by Brown. Coppin State took their first lead of the night after a pair of free-throws by Brownlee giving the Eagles a 76-74 advantage.

Savannah State led 83-80 with 1:25 left to play. Treadwell was fouled and made both of his free-throws trimming the Tigers lead to 83-82 with 35-seconds remaining. Moments later, senior Terry Harris Jr. came up with a key steal giving the Eagles a chance at a final shot down one point.

With 18-seconds left, Coppin State comes out of a timeout and works a play for Brownlee to attempt the game winning shot. Despite Brownlee's shot coming up short freshman Dejuan Clayton got the offensive rebound and made the winning shot leaving three seconds on the clock. The Tigers shot was no good and the Eagles came away with an 84-83 road win at Savannah State.

Savannah State's Dexter McClanahan scored 28 points, Troyce Manassa had 22 points and Zach Sellers added 11 points from off of the Tigers bench.

The Eagles will play their final road game of the regular season on Monday, February 27th against rival Morgan State University at 7:30 p.m.
