Chas Brown finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds marking his second double-double of the season in a 83-75 home win for Coppin State over Delaware State University on Monday, February 13
th . The Eagles made a season-high 25 free-throws, grabbed 47 rebounds and dished out 19 assists at home against the Hornets.
Coppin State improves to 7-20 overall and 6-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings. Delaware State falls to 9-19 overall and 6-7 in MEAC play.
Chas Brown posted his second double-double of the season shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field registering 22 points with 12 rebounds. Brown also converted on 10-of-16 free-throws which were also season-highs. Senior
Terry Harris Jr. followed with 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 made free-throws with seven rebounds. Harris has made 32 consecutive free-throws over the last eight games. Junior
Tre' Thomas recorded a season-high eight rebounds and four assists. Thomas chipped in 15 points making three shots from long range. Senior
Keith Shivers tied a career-high with six assists and made 4-of-10 three-pointers. Freshman
Dejuan Clayton recorded a season-high two blocked shots and was the final Eagle in double figure scoring with ten points and six assists.
Coppin State made six first half three-pointers and took the lead at the 16-minute mark (7-6) and never let up. Brown was a force in the paint early on with four first half field goals and six rebounds. Shivers drained three first half three-pointers and Thomas had a pair with the Eagles shooting 33-percent (6-18) from three-point territory. Shivers also had nine points while both Thomas and Harris netted eight points.
The Eagles opened their largest advantage of the evening by the 8:57 mark in the period after Thomas knocked down a three-pointer stretching the CSU lead to 14 (22-8). The Hornets had 14 bench points in the half and shot 41-percent from the field (13-31). At the half, Coppin State led 39-33.
Delaware State came out in the second half and quickly made it a three point game (39-36) with an early shot from downtown. CSU's Thomas answered with a three-pointer of his own and then made a pair of free-throws increasing the Eagles lead back to eight (44-36) at the 18:19 mark. Delaware State battled and eventually tied the game (54-54) with 9:53 left to play. Once again, Coppin State's hot shooting from behind the arc sparked their defensive pressure. Clayton knocked down his only three-pointer of the game giving the Eagles a slight cushion.
Coppin State's aggressive attack turned into 26 second half free-throws which 21 were successful. Brown made 9-of-12 attempts, Harris went a perfect 5-for-5 and Clayton added three as the Eagles shot 80-percent from the charity stripe. Delaware State came within four (69-65) with 2:22 left, but made free-throws by CSU buried them in the end. The Eagles picked up their second victory in a row after dropping five straight downing Delaware State, 83-75.
Delaware State was led by DeAndre Haywood's 24 points and Devin Morgan's 14 points.
The Eagles begin a three game road swing with four games left in the regular season on Saturday, February 18th at South Carolina State at 4 p.m. in Orangeburg, SC. Coppin State won the first meeting of the season 75-59 over the Bulldogs on Wednesday, January 4th in Baltimore, MD.
