RICHMOND, Va. – Genesis Lucas scored a game-high 22 points but the Coppin State University women's basketball team fell at Virginia Commonwealth, 62-47, on Monday afternoon at EJ Wade Arena. The Eagles now stand at 1-10 overall while the Rams move to 2-7.
Aside from Lucas, Coppin also got 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds from
Chance Graham as well as nine points and five rebounds from
Candice Beverly. The rest of the Eagles combined for just three points while the Rams were much more balanced with four players in double figures.
The teams played even in the first period with VCU holding a slight 15-14 advantage after the first ten minutes. The Eagles took a brief lead in the second after Lucas nailed a pair of free throws to start the quarter but VCU scored eight-straight and took a six point lead into the half.
VCU jumped right out of the gate strong to start the third with a three-point play, but Coppin ran off eight-straight points, starting with a layup by
Mia Crooms and punctuated by a three by Lucas to cut the deficit to a single point with 4:47 left in the period.
After Lucas' triple, VCU then scored 12 straight points and the Eagles got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Coppin will return to action on Wednesday, December 20 when it hosts 15
th-ranked Maryland at 2 pm in the Eagles' final non-conference game before open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on January 3 at Norfolk State.
