Hampton, VA – Coppin volleyball (1-17, 1-1) continued MEAC play today as they fell to the Hampton Pirates (7-11, 2-0) in straight sets 3-0 (16-25, 20-25, 18-25). Coppin was led by
Asia Stennis,
Christa Johnson and
Angel Jamerson.
Coppin struggled to get into a rhythm in the first set as Hampton quickly started with a 5-1 lead. Coppin would bounce back and tie the match at 5 behind a Johnson kill from Jamerson, and a service ace by Jamerson. The tie would be the closest Coppin would get as Hampton slowly pulled away and eventually extended their lead by as much as nine. Hampton would take the first set 16-25.
The Lady Eagles fell behind again to start the second set, but managed to turn a 1-4 deficit into a 6-4 lead. That five point run was highlighted by a kill by Stennis from Jamerson and three consecutive service aces from Stennis. Hampton would come back and take the lead 7-6, but Coppin would benefit from a service error to tie the match at 7. Hampton would go on a 9-2 point run before a Johnson kill would start Coppin's run with the score at 10-16. Unfortunately, that deficit would be too large as Coppin would score two more times before Hampton would begin a 9-10 scoring run to close out the set 20-25.
The final set began in the fashion as the first two as Coppin spotted Hampton five points before chipping away and Jamerson getting a kill and two service aces to help cut the score to 4-5. Hampton would increase the lead 6-10 before a
Valiyah Barnes and Stennis kills from Jamerson would put Coppin within one, 9-10.
Bailee Jackson would muster a kill and a ball handling and attack error by Hampton would tie the score at 13. Hampton would again distance themselves from Coppin and go on a 7-4 run to put the score at 17-20. Coppin would close within two at 18-20, but the Lady Pirates would again outscore Coppin 5-0 to close out the set and match 18-25.
