TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coppin State loss a heartbreaker to Florida A&M on the road, 54-53 on Saturday, January 7
th in the Al Lawson Center. The Rattlers scored the game-winning basket with 0.4 seconds to go on a tip-in downing the Eagles.
Coppin State falls to 2-15 overall and 1-1 in MEAC play while Florida A&M improves to 4-11 and 2-0 in the MEAC.
Seniors
Terry Harris Jr. and
Joshua Treadwell both finished with 11 points leading the Eagles in scoring. Harris recoded a team-high seven rebounds and blocked two shots while Treadwell nailed 3-of-7 three-pointers coming off of the CSU bench. Senior
Chas Brown finished with nine points and four rebounds. Senior
Keith Shivers added nine points with four steals and junior
Tre' Thomas had seven points.
Thomas led the first half scoring for the Eagles with seven points. Harris had six points and Shivers scored four in the first half. Florida A&M led at the half, 27-21. Treadwell anchored the second half scoring with 11 points including three shots from downtown. Brown was efficient from the field making 3-of-4 shots tallying seven points.
Shivers gave the Eagles a one point (30-29) lead early in the second half on a three-pointer. Coppin State tied the game up two more times down the stretch and then went ahead by two (48-46) after Treadwell's three pointer at the 3:40 mark. FAMU responded and led by four (52-48) with 2:28 left in an exciting MEAC contest.
In the final two minutes of action, CSU got to the free-throw line six times but only converted on 2-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe. Coppin State trailed FAMU by two (52-50) with 1:19 to go until Treadwell lifted the Eagles into the lead on a three-pointer with 37-seconds to go (53-52). The Rattlers missed a jumper due to a blocked shot by Harris with 15 seconds left, them FAMU fouled and sent CSU to the free-throw line with 11 seconds. Coppin State missed both free-throws leaving FAMU with a chance for a final shot.
The Rattlers came down the court and took the lead after a tip-in basket leaving 0.4 seconds in regulation. Coppin State did not have enough time to get off a final shot suffering a heartbreaking loss on the road to Florida A&M, 54-53.
The Eagles remain in the state of Florida with a road trip to Daytona Beach facing Bethune-Cookman on Monday, January 9th at 7:30 p.m. Coppin State leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman 48-13 and won the last two meetings including a 62-54 win in Daytona Beach on Jan. 16, 2016.
