Volleyball Opens Season at Kristen Dickmann Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. - Coppin State volleyball begins its second season under head coach Kyetta May by traveling to Annapolis, Md. for the Kristen Dickmann Invitational hosted by Navy.
 
The Eagles will play three games in two days, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. ET contest on Friday against Delaware. The Blue Hens went 12-17 in 2015 and were picked sixth in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll while senior middle blocker Alexa Swann was named a CAA Preseason Honorable Mention.
 
Coppin State then takes on tournament-host Navy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by New Hampshire at 4:30 p.m. Navy went 9-20 last season, while New Hampshire went 21-9.

About Coppin State's Season Openers
  • Coach Kyetta May is in her 2nd season as Coppin State's head coach. Coach May made an immediate impact in her inaugural season in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) by producing the 2015 MEAC Volleyball Player of the Year despite losing three players to season-ending injuries.
  • The Coppin State volleyball program has won only one season opener; back in 2014, the Eagles won their first two matches against NJIT (3-0) and Loyola (3-1) at the La Salle Invitational.

  • Coppin State is 0-1 all-time vs. Delaware with the last meeting taking place on October 29, 1994 on the road. The Blue Hens took a three-set win over the Eagles.
  • Coppin State and Navy have faced each other 22 times with the Mids holding a 22-0 record against the Eagles. The last meeting came Sept. 28, 2010 with Navy winning 3-0.
  • Coppin and New Hampshire met once before on September 25, 2009 at the Providence Friar Volleyball Classic. CSU fell 3-0.

Veteran Notes
  • Bailee Jackson returns as Coppin State's active leader in career kills (173), digs (444), service aces (20), and blocks (24). The junior outside hitter recorded the team's highest attack percentage of last season and also had the third highest percentage amongst the MEAC with .612 versus Delaware State on Oct. 30 with 18 kills on 29 attacks.
  • Glorines Rosado led the Eagles with 344 digs and 20 service aces in 2015. The sophomore libero posted five 20+ dig performances including a season-high 29 digs at St. Francis on Sept. 19. In 18 matches she reached double figures in digs finishing with the sixth highest single-season digs total in program history.
  • Marlena Guice appeared in seven matches and 19 sets last season. She recorded 20 kills, a .084 hitting percentage. 23 digs and three blocks before suffering a season-ending injury versus Fordham.

Newcomer Notes
  • May added six freshmen for the 2016 season; Kennedy Curtis from Douglasville County High School (Douglasville, Ga.), Christa Johnson from Crestview High School (Crestview, Fla.), and Jasmine Lougheed from Laura Secord Secondary School (St. Catharines, Ontario) at middle blocker, Angel Jamerson from Ed W. Clark High School (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Dominique Madarang from Martin Luther King High School (Riverside, Calif.) playing setter, and Asia Stennis from East St. Louis Senior High School (East St. Louis, Ill.) as an outside hitter.
  • Valiyah Barnes is a transfer from Arkansas Pine Bluff playing middle blocker, Guro Froberg is a transfer from Missouri State West Plains as an outside hitter, and Jennifer Gell is a transfer from Harcum playing libero.

Coaching Notes
  • Ashlie Jones joins the coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach for the 2016 season. Coach Jones played for Coach May at Kentucky State and Arkansas Pine Bluff. She was an All-SWAC performer back in 2014.
