Brown Homers in Setback to Delaware State

DOVER- Freshman pitcher Cayla Brown led Coppin State with two RBIs, scored one run, and hit her first home run in the final game of the weekend series against Delaware State on Sunday, April 3 at the Hornets' Nest.The Eagles fell to the Hornets 14-2.

The Lady Eagles scored two runs on four hits against the Lady Hornets falling in the weekend series 3-0.

Delaware State got on the board first scoring three runs on six hits in the opening inning of play.

Freshman catcher Alisha Esqueda had the Lady Eagles first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the top of second inning. 

The Hornets added one run on two hits to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the second inning.

Freshman designated hitter Melanie Benge singled to left field at the top of the third for Coppin State's only hit of the inning.

Delaware State began to heat up in the bottom of the third inning and rattled off 10 runs on eight hits.

The Hornets led 14-0 after three innings of play.

Senior outfielder Shelby Mendoza picked up Coppin State's third hit of the game with a single to shortstop in the top of fourth inning.
 
In the fifth and final inning, freshman infielder Haley Hayes reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Then Cayla Brown came to the plate and crushed a home run over the left field fence, scoring Hayes and herself for two runs.

The Lady Eagles comeback effort would end there as they fell 14-2.

Freshman pitcher Megan Navarez led Coppin State throwing 2.1 innings.

Freshman pitcher Dakota Gartell went 1.2 innings for the Lady Eagles.

Coppin State will complete their three game road trip with a game against George Washington University on Wednesday, April 6 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex in Washington, D.C.
