BALTIMORE- Four Coppin State softball players registered two hits as the Lady Eagles dropped a pair in a road double header against Delaware State on Saturday, April 2nd in Dover, DE.
Freshman infielder Alisha Esqueda recorded her second home run of the season.
Delaware State erupted for nine runs on six hits in the opening inning and added two more runs on three hits in the second inning,
Senior catcher Shelby Mendoza was walked to lead off the fourth inning followed by senior outfielder Alanna Williams reaching on a fielder's choice.
Esqueda launched a two-RBI home run over center field, scoring Williams.
The Hornets closed the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring seven runs on five hits, taking game one, 18—2.
Freshman pitchers Megan Narvaez and Dakota Gartell both tossed eight innings for the Lady Eagles.
Narvaez finished with one strikeout.
In the second game of the double header Coppin State scored five runs on nine hits but in the end suffered a 15-5 rout.
Freshman pitcher Melanie Benge led off the second game with a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Outfielder Alanna Williams pushed an RBI single through center field, scoring Benge.
Alisha Esqueda followed with a single to left center for the Lady Eagles' third hit of the game.
Senior infielder Danielle Smith slapped an RBI single to right center, scoring Williams.
Esqueda advanced to third and Smith advanced to second.
Coppin State took an early 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning.
Delaware State answered with one run on two hits cutting the deficit to 2-1 after the first inning.
Melanie Benge singled to right field for her second hit of the game in the top of the second inning.
Williams also recorded her second hit of the game with a single to the shortstop in second inning.
The Hornets exploded with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning and six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Coppin State responded with three runs at the top of the fourth inning.
Freshman infielder Hatika James led the inning off with a single to left field. James advanced to third base on an error by the pitcher.
Megan Narvaez reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a Dakota Gartell walk.
Catcher Shelby Mendoza reached on a RBI fielder's choice, scoring James.
Williams blasted a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Megan Narvaez.
Dakota Gartell advanced to third base on a throwing error by the catcher.
Danielle Smith singled to left field, scoring Gartell. It was Smith's second hit and second RBI of the game bringing the score to 11-5 in favor of the Hornets.
Delaware State scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 15-5 lead into the fifth inning.
Freshman infielder Haley Hayes added a double to right center for the Eagles final hit of the game.
Freshman Melanie Benge led the Lady Eagles going 2.2 innings.
Dakota Gartell added one strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched.
Coppin State will it's weekend road series with a single game Sunday, April 3 at the Hornets' Nest in Dover, DE. The game will begin at noon.Â
