BALTIMORE- The Coppin State softball team registered six hits led by
Danielle Smith's three hits and one RBI in the Lady Eagles 6-1 loss to UMBC on Tuesday March 8 at UMBC Softball Stadium.
Coppin State did a solid job on offense in the first five innings against the Retrievers. Senior infielder
Danielle Smith led the game off with a single to right field. Senior outfielder
Alanna Williams followed with another single down the right field line.
In the third inning
Danielle Smith singled to right field again for her second hit of the game.
Alanna Williams logged her second hit of the game with a single to right center.
In the top of the fifth inning freshman infielder
Haley Hayes singled to center field for her only hit of the contest.
Danielle Smith then doubled to right field, bringing home pinch runner junior
Taylor Haller, for the Lady Eagles lone RBI of the game.
The UMBC Retrievers scored six run and tallied 10 hits.
UMBC scored one run in the first inning, one more run in the fourth inning and exploded for four runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher
Dakota Gartell went five innings, striking out one batter and surrendering six hits. Freshman
Melanie Benge pitched one inning and retired one Retriever.
Danielle Smith and
Alanna Williams both recorded mutil-hit games for the third time this season.
Coppin State will return to action for two weekend home series with a doubleheader against Marist College on Friday, March 11 beginning at 3:15 and another doubleheader against Lafayette College on Saturday, March 12 beginning at noon. Both series will be at the Softball Complex on campus of Coppin State University.
