Alanna Williams dominates in CSU's doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's

BALTIMORE- Senior outfielder Alanna Williams went yard as seven different Lady Eagles recorded hits in Game 1 of Coppin State's doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's (MD) on Saturday, March 12 at the Softball Complex at Coppin State University.
 
The Lady Eagles finished with two run and seven hits.
 
The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead at the end of the opening inning of play.
 
Senior infielder Danielle Smith led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right field.
 
The Mountaineers added three hits and two more runs in the top of the second inning and one hit and three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning senior centerfielder Alanna Williams stepped up to the plate and slammed a home run over the left field wall for Coppin State's first score of the game and the team's first home run of the 2016 season.
 
For Williams, a native of Elyria, OH, it was her second career home run.
 
Freshman outfielder Cayla Brown followed with a single down the left field line for the Lady Eagles third hit of the game.
 
Freshman infielder Megan Narvaez added Coppin State's next hit, a single up the middle, as Mount St, Mary's closed the fifth inning with a 6-1 lead.
 
Freshman pitcher Melanie Benge sent a triple into left field to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the Lady Eagles.
 
Benge then scored the Lady Eagles final run of the game as freshman catcher Alisha Esqueda hit an RBI single to right field.
 
Junior infielder Taylor Haller singed for the Lady Eagles final hit of Game 1.
 
Freshman Melanie Benge went 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out four Mountaineers.
 
Mount St. Mary's won the first game, 10-2.
 
In the second game, senior outfielder Alanna Williams and freshman designated hitter Alisha Esqueda both recorded a multi-hit outing for Coppin State.
 
The Lady Eagles scored three runs on seven hits and three RBIs.
 
Senior Danielle Smith was walked to lead of the inning and then advanced to second on a Megan Narvaez single for Coppin State's first hit of the game.
 
Alanna Williams followed up with a RBI double, scoring Smith.
 
Coppin State's second run of the inning came on a freshman outfielder Melanie Benge RBI single to the pitcher, bringing home Narvaez.
 
The Lady took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
 
The Mountaineers would score two runs of their own to bring the game to a 2-2 tie to start to bottom of the second inning.
 
Senior infielder took over the bottom of the second inning as she stole second base after hitting a single for Coppin State's fourth hit of the game.
 
Smith scored the Lady Eagles only run of the inning as Megan Narvaez tallied her second hit of the game with a RBI single to the shortstop.
 
Coppin State led Mount St. Mary's 3-2 through the first four innings.
 
The Mountaineers exploded for six hits and five runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 7-3 lead.
 
Alisha Esqueda singled to right field for her first hit of the game.
 
Mount St. Mary's scored its final run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Alanna Williams and Alisha Esqueda both hit singles in the final inning to record multi-hit outings.
 
Freshman Megan Narvaez pitched 4.1 innings for the Lady Eagles, retiring one batter.
 
Melanie Benge went 2.0 innings and struck out a pair.
 
The Mountaineers would hold on for an, 8-3 victory over the Lady Eagles.
 
Coppin State returned to action for a Sunday matchup agaisnt the UMBC Retrivers in Baltimore at the UMBC Softball Stadium on March 13.
