Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough to Lift Lady Eagles Over Savannah State

BALTIMORE- Three Coppin State women's basketball players scored in double figures in a 57-55 loss to Savannah State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road contest Monday night February 8 in Tiger Arena in Savannah, GA.
 
Coppin State (7-14, 4-5) has now dropped three consecutive road MEAC games.
 
Junior Keena Samuels led the Lady Eagles with 13 points. She added a career best eight rebounds, tied a team high with three assists and a career high seven steals in 31 minutes of game action.
 
Samuels is averaging 16.4 points in MEAC play and has scored in double figures in every MEAC game this season.
 
Genesis Lucas tallied 11 points in 34 minutes, including sinking five of her six foul shots. Lucas added three rebounds, two steals and one assist for Coppin State.
 
Senior Janelle Lane scored 10 points and four rebounds. Lane led the Lady Eagles with three blocks and six made free throws in 30 minutes on the floor.
 
Omaah Tayong chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
 
Amber Griffin also finished the game with eight points. Griffin added five rebounds and three assists off the bench.
 
The Lady Eagles scored 16 points off 20 Lady Tiger turnovers and finished the game with 12 second chance points.
 
Coppin State outscored Savannah State in paint points, 20-18 and won the battle of the benches, 13-5.
 
The Savannah State Lady Tigers (7-15, 4-7) snapped a two game losing streak with the win.
 
Kenyata Hendrix led the Lady Tigers with 17 points and six rebounds, including two made free throws to seal the game. Rhianna Warren added 19 points and eight rebounds for Savannah State.
 
Coppin State will return home for the first of four straight games when it squares off against Howard Saturday February 13. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
