Tayong Nets Double-Double in Heart Breaking Loss to Howard

BALTIMORE – The Lady Eagles suffered a heart breaking loss to Howard at home on Saturday, February 13th, 71-69. Three reached double figure scoring led by senior Omaah Tayong's 19 points with 11 rebounds.

Coppin State falls to 7-15 overall and 4-6 in MEAC play. Coppin State won the first meeting of the season 83-67 on January 9th in Burr Gymnasium.

The Lady Eagles carried a 39-29 advantage into halftime after outrebounding Howard 23-13. Janelle Lane and Omaah Tayong combined for 14 rebounds and their defense held the Bisons to 22% (7-31) shooting after two quarters. Tayong had nine first half points while Lane added eight points. Coppin State went 58% (18-31) from the field and made a pair of shots from three-point range by Amber Griffin and Tanaysa Henderson.

Howard regrouped and came out strong in the third quarter making 4-of-6 three-pointers. Their offensive production picked up from 22% in the first half to 43% in the second half. Coppin State's lead disappeared by the 3:56 mark in the third quarter as Howard took their first lead of the game 48-47.

The game was tied twice in the fourth quarter with the lead changing three times. With two minutes left in the game Coppin State's Genesis Lucas put her team ahead with a three pointer but Howard responded with a three of their own to tie the game at 69-69. The Lady Eagles missed their next opportunity at the basket as Howard was successful on their attempt with 1:08 remaining on the clock.

The Lady Eagles trailed 71-69 with one minute left. Several opportunities at the basket failed and Howard came from behind on the road to defeat Coppin State, 71-69. Howard outscored the Lady Eagles 42-30 in the second half.

Omaah Tayong notched her sixth double-double of the season recording 19 points with 11 rebounds. She went 9-for-11 from the field in 28 minutes of action. Janelle Lane added 13 points with a career-high 13 rebounds against Howard. Lane shot 6-for-12 from the field and had four assists. Amber Griffin scored in double figures for the ninth time this season. She finished with 11 points and four assists in 37 minutes. Genesis Lucas tied a career-high in assists with eight total and Jordan Swails anchored the bench with six points.

The Lady Eagles returns to action on Monday, February 15th against Delaware State University at 5:30 p.m.
