UNC Downs Coppin State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two Eagles finished in double-digit scoring in a 90-55 loss for Coppin State at North Carolina on Wednesday, December 28th in Carmichael Arena.

Coppin State falls to 0-11 record with one more non-conference game slated before MEAC play at the beginning of the New Year. North Carolina improves to a 10-2 overall record.

Graduate Vanessa Neal finished with a career-high 18 points and four assists against the Tar Heels. She made a career-best seven field goals including a pair of three-pointers. Neal's point total was the third highest for an Eagle this season.

Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas returned to action after suffering a mid-season injury and led the CSU bench with 16 points. Lucas tied her career-high with three made three-pointers and also dished out four assists.

The first half scoring was anchored by Lucas' eight points and four points each by Neal and senior Keena Samuels. UNC hung 37 first quarter points and carried the momentum into the half leading, 56-23. The Eagles made ten first half field goals including two three-pointers by Lucas.

Vanessa Neal paced Coppin State with 12 points in the fourth quarter knocking down 4-of-5 attempts from the field. She also nailed a pair of three-pointers playing the entire quarter. The Eagles outscored UNC 20-15 in the final quarter, but the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome in a 90-55 defeat on the road.

Coppin State made five three-pointers finishing 33% from behind the arc. At the free-throw line the Eagles converted on 12-of-18 attempts posting their second highest total of the year. The Tar Heels recorded 40 rebounds which was the lowest mark by an opponent against the Eagles.

Freshman Chance Graham led the Eagles in rebounding with six and added seven points. Freshman Mia Crooms tied a season-high with two steals. Graduate Tiara Goode made a season-high three free-throws and freshman Jordan Meaurie Pickett scored her first points as an Eagle at UNC.

The Eagles will close out non-conference play at UMBC on Saturday, December 31st at 1 p.m.
