BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
Guro Froberg recorded her third double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs as Coppin State volleyball closed out the 2016 regular season with a 3-1 (25-11, 16-15, 22-25, 12-25) home defeat to rival Morgan State University on Sunday, November 6
th inside the Physical Education Complex Auxiliary Gym.
Froberg finished with a season-high three service aces. She had nine double figure kill matches this year to go along with five double-digit dig performances. Junior
Jennifer Gell had her first kill of the season and tied a season-high with ten digs. Freshman
Christa Johnson had a career-best match tallying eight kills, eight digs and an assist against Morgan State. Johnson recorded a season-high .227 attack percentage on 22 total attacks. Freshman
Dominique Madarang finished with 27 assists and junior
Glorines Rosado had 17 digs. The Eagles six service aces is their second highest total of the season.
The Eagles came out strong in the first set with 13 team kills and two errors for a .440 attack percentage against the Bears. Froberg carried the offensive load with five kills and freshman
Jasmine Lougheed added four kills. Madarang served up nine assists and Rosado led defensively with five digs.
Coppin State took an early 6-0 lead stunning Morgan State early on. Froberg spotted a pair of kills in the beginning followed by Johnson. The Eagles pushed the lead to 13-1 after Morgan State was called for a pair of attack errors. The Bears were held to .160 attack percentage and were forced into four team errors. Lougheed had the final points for the Eagles in a 25-11 first set win.
Morgan State tied the match with a 25-16 win in set two over the Eagles. Morgan State's offense improved with 12 kills in the set posting a .333 attack percentage. CSU had nine in the set paced by Johnson. Johnson had three kills as Coppin State finished with a .083 attack percentage in the second set. Freshman
Kennedy Curtis and Lougheed both gathered two kills and Madarang tallied seven assists. Morgan State broke out to their largest lead of the set (19-9) before cruising to a win.
The Bears took over in sets three and four with 14 kills in each of the sets. The Eagles on the other hand struggled for offense finishing with nine kills in set three and four in set four. Froberg once again led CSU with four kills in the third and Johnson's two led them in the fourth set. Morgan State downed the Eagles 25-22 in set three and 25-12 in set four to sweep the season series against the rival.
The 2016 Coppin State Eagles volleyball team ends their year with a 2-24 overall record with a 2-10 MEAC record.
