CONWAY, S.C. – Coppin State's bench scored 47 points off a season-high performance by junior
Tre' Thomas in an 89-59 loss to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 16th at the HTC Center.
Thomas scored 23 of the Eagles 47 bench points on 6-of 14 made three-pointers against the Chanticleers. He played 27 minutes, grabbed four rebounds and made 3-of-5 free-throws. Sophomore
Lucian Brownlee also scored in double figures with 11 points knocking down 3-of-6 three-pointers from the bench. Senior
Izais Hicks recorded a career-high ten rebounds in 27 minutes and had the Eagles only block of the game. The Eagles made a season-high 12 three-pointers and had eight steals. They also took 70 total shots which was also a season-best.
In the first four minutes of action Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 16-0 lead as the Eagles struggled from the field. Brownlee ended the drought with a three-pointer at the 15:36 mark in the first half to get the Eagles going. Thomas proceeded to make back-to-back three's with 13-minutes to play cutting the Chanticleers' advantage to 21-9. Senior
Terry Harris Jr. followed with two layups as the Eagles finally reached double-digit scoring at the 11:33 mark.
Coastal Carolina made 12-of-13 from the charity stripe in the first half. Coppin State made six three's but had several defensive lapse with 12 personal fouls. Thomas led the Eagles in the first half with ten points and Coastal Carolina led at the half 49-29.
The Eagles matched their first half performance in the second half with six more three-pointers. Thomas had three, Brownlee along with freshmen
Dejuan Clayton and
Rasool Hinson each made one. Coastal Carolina matched the Eagles with six three's in the final half of play while shooting 48% from the field. Coppin State's defense forced 11 second half turnovers but in the end the Chanticleers won by double-digits, 89-59.
The Eagles travel to Provo, Utah for their third game of the MGM Tournament against BYU. Coppin State will face BYU for the first time ever on the hardwood on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 9 p.m. (ET).
