HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior
Joshua Treadwell made five three-pointers finishing with a game-high 25 points in a 74-72 season opening loss on the road to Hofstra University on Friday, Nov. 11th.
Coppin State shot the ball well from behind the arc in their season opener against Hofstra.
Joshua Treadwell scored the Eagles first five points of the game and continued his offense with a second three-pointer within the first seven minutes of action. Five Eagles scored a point in the first ten minutes paced by Treadwell's eight points.
Hofstra took a 23-19 advantage with seven minutes left in the half. The Eagles came back with some offense behind their bench by
Izais Hicks and
Tre' Thomas. Hicks scored a basket in the paint and then added a pair of free-throws. Thomas knocked down the Eagles' fifth three-pointer of the first half as CSU jumped ahead 28-23 with four minutes left.
The Eagles remained aggressive from the field making 7-of-15 shots from long range in the first half. In the final four minutes
Lucian Brownlee and Thomas each hit three's stretching the CSU lead to double digits. At the end of the first half Coppin State led Hofstra, 36-28.
In the second half, Treadwell hit a pair of three-pointers keeping the Eagles ahead of the Pride. But the Pride came back from their deficit and tied the game at 50-50 by the ten minute mark of the half. The Eagles later called a timeout with 9:37 left to play attempting to stop an 11-0 run by the Pride. Treadwell helped reclaim the lead at 52-50 after making a pair of free-throws for his 20th point of the night.
Coppin State took a 64-63 lead with 3:30 left to play on a three-pointer by
Dejuan Clayton. Hofstra responded with a three-pointer of their own and then
Keith Shivers tied it up again at 66 on a jumper in the lane. The action went back and forth in the final minute of the game with Hofstra holding onto a 71-67 lead.
With 30 seconds left to play, the Eagles grabbed the rebound and pushed it up the floor to Treadwell. CSU's leading scorer was fouled behind the three-point line by the Pride. He went to the line and converted 2-of-3 attempts cutting the Hofstra lead to one point (72-71). After Hofstra extended their advantage to three (74-71) with 11 seconds left they committed a second foul from behind the three-point line this time sending Clayton to the line for a chance to tie the game. The first shot missed and then he made the second free-throw (74-72). The third attempt also missed and then the Eagles grabbed the rebound but failed to get a shot off as time expired in the Mack Sports Complex. Hofstra came back and outscored the Eagles 46-36 in the second half and won the season opener, 74-72.
Joshua Treadwell finished one point shy of his career-high scoring 25 points against Hofstra. He made 7-of-14 shots from the field including 5-of-9 from three-point land and 6-of-9 free-throws. Treadwell also grabbed eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Dejuan Clayton led the Eagle bench scoring with 11 points in 14 minutes. He made 4-of-6 shots from the field and 2-of-3 three-pointers.
Tre' Thomas added eight points also from the bench on 2-of-5 made three-pointers.
Izais Hicks finished with a career-high six rebounds and scored six points.
Joseph Gripper dished out a team-high five assists and
Terry Harris Jr. recorded eight rebounds in the opener.
Coppin State travels to Valparaiso on Monday, Nov. 14 (7 pm ET). This will be the first ever meeting between the Crusaders and Eagles.
