HANOVER, Md. –
Bryant Miranda finished a week to remember with another home run during an 8-2 loss to Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball game at Joe Cannon Stadium Sunday afternoon.
In five games this week, Miranda slugged two home runs, drove in six runs, produced a .316 batting average and a .632 slugging percentage. He drove in four runs in a single game for the first time in his career against Towson Tuesday to start the week. Miranda closed the week with his ninth multi-hit effort of the season.
He had two of Coppin State's five hits against the Spartans. Miranda also scored both runs. Miranda singled in the first inning, homered in the third inning and was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning. He scored on a wild pitch. Miranda also chipped in with some nice defensive plays over the weekend as well.
Unfortunately, Miranda's effort wasn't enough to slow down Norfolk State, which extended its winning streak to 12 games by scoring six unearned runs.
The setback combined with Delaware State's 12-10 triumph over Maryland Eastern Shore officially eliminated Coppin State from MEAC playoff contention. With six games remaining, Coppin trails Delaware State by that margin, but the Hornets have clinched the season series already.
Pitcher
Myles Taylor was another bright spot for Coppin State. He tossed 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings. Taylor looked sharp and strong on the hill as he retired 11 of the 12 Norfolk State hitters he faced. Starting pitcher Yayha Muhammed was solid as well as he made big pitches during the game to escape trouble in the third and fourth innings.
Freshman
Jesse Kraft notched his first career collegiate hit with an infield single in the fourth inning. Alex Brown and
Alejandro Hernandez also had hits for Coppin State, which ended two innings with runners being thrown out or picked off on the bases.
The Eagles begin another busy week when they visit Georgetown Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
