GAME PREVIEW: Coppin State at Towson

BALTIMORE – The Coppin State women's basketball team takes the short trip up Interstate 83 to visit Towson in a battle of squads looking for its first victory of the 2015-16 season.

Action between Coppin State (0-3 overall) and Towson (0-2) from the SECU Arena begins at 4:00 p.m. Fans can follow with live stats and live video. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since Towson claimed a 66-59 victory over Coppin State on Jan. 4, 2014 at the Physical Education Center.

For Coppin State, this is the second of four consecutive games against Maryland schools.

Coppin State saw an opportunity for its first win slip away in a double overtime loss to UMBC, 68-61, Wednesday afternoon. Senior Janelle Lane led the Lady Eagles with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Tanaysa Henderson grabbed a career best 11 rebounds and senior Omaah Tayong notched her fourth career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

They helped Coppin State win the rebounding battle, 56-39.

Unfortunately those nice things were negated by 34 turnovers, 34.4 percent shooting and three points in the second overtime in which Coppin State went the final three minutes, 47 seconds without a field goal. Now, Coppin State must march forward as it plays its final road game of November.

Through three games, Lane leads Coppin State in scoring with a 13.0 point per game. Junior Keena Samuels is second on the team in scoring (10.7). Tayong leads the team in rebounding (9.0).

Waiting for Coppin State will be a pair of familiar faces, guards Raven and Raine Bankston, who are eligible after sitting out a year following their transfer from Delaware State. In one career game against Coppin State, Raven Bankston scored 21 points for DSU in an 80-75 loss to Coppin on Dec. 7, 2015.

Raven is off and running this season for Towson. She scored 31 points in an 88-76 road loss to George Mason in its last outing on Tuesday night. Through two games, Raven is averaging 22.5 points per game. Siani Martin, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Co-Rookie of the Week, had 17 points against George Mason. She is averaging 17.5 points per outing.
Senior guard Dominique Johnson was the third Tiger in double figures as she finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a game-high four steals. Johnson is scoring at a 16.0 point per game clip. Sophomore center Daijha Thomas led the Tigers on the boards for the second straight game with nine.

Coppin State will return home to meet Mount St. Mary's next Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
