Coppin cuts down Goldey-Beacom behind Harris

BALTIMORE – Junior forward Terry Harris Jr., headed straight to the barbershop for a fresh fade after recording his third double-double of the season in helping Coppin State rally from a 15-point second-half deficit and claim a thrilling 80-73 victory at the Physical Education Complex Wednesday afternoon.

Making his home debut, Harris turned in a monster performance, scoring a career high 26 points and grabbing a team high 10 rebounds in 37 minutes. Harris scored 20 of his 26 after halftime on 9-for-13 accuracy from the field.

"I just feel really confident right now," Harris said. "I try to go out and set a good tone and be a leader for teammates. I'm getting healthier and I have a hunger that drives me each and every game."

Harris is beginning to get healthy after an injury limited his practice participation during the last two weeks of training leading to CSU's opening road trip. Once the Eagles begin conference play, Harris will be a headache as his combination of quickness, height and deft shooting touch will be a tough matchup for anybody.

Second-year head coach Michael Grant has been very impressed with Harris' play to start the season.

"He's playing within the system," Grant said. "He's shooting the ball very well. He's also figured out that if he continues to move the ball it will eventually come back to him for easy shots."

Coppin State (1-2) left everything they had on the court in Wednesday and needed everybody's best to finally catch and subdue the stubborn Lightning, who led for most of the game.

Just check out junior guard Keith Shivers' left eye for proof. Shivers suffered a cut that drew blood while diving on the floor a loose ball. He looked like a boxer between rounds of a fight while he was being attended to by the trainer.

Coppin State outscored Goldey-Beacom 51-32 in the second half to secure its first victory of the season. Four Eagles scored in double figures to help the second half surge.

Junior guard Christian Kessee added 15 points, making it the 15th time in his career with at least two 3-pointers in a single game.

Junior guard Trevon Seymore had a strong all around performance overcoming foul trouble, as he finished the game with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in only 17 minutes.

Junior forward Josh Treadwell picked up where he left off in the previous game against Iowa. Treadwell chipped in 10 points, three rebounds and two steals while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Treadwell also knocked down two clutch free throws the close out the game.

Goldey-Beacom (0-2) was paced by Shakeem Wilson's 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Elijah Tillman also added 12 points and six boards for the Lightning.

Overall, Coach Grant was happy with how his team fought back and competed in the second half.

"We can't continue to play catch up ball and be successful," Grant said. "We need to go out and play with the same intensity we brought after halftime for the full 40 minutes of a game. In the first half we were not playing with a total team effort and we were going through the motions. I am still proud of how my guys fought back and competed. They showed some resiliency this afternoon."

The Eagles will return to action next Monday night November 23 at 7:30 p.m. when Chestnut Hill pays a visit to the Physical Education Complex.?
