Spartans Sweep Coppin State 25-15, 25-16, 25-14 September 30, 2011

NORFOLK, Va. -- Ariel Richard had six kills and five digs and Janka Schmitt had five kills, but Coppin State dropped a 25-15, 25-16, 25-14 decision to Norfolk State on Friday in Echols Hall.
Beatriz Ferreira led Norfolk State with 10 kills, while Jasmine Frazier had eight kills and posted a .667 hitting percentage.
The Spartans (5-9, 1-1 MEAC) dominated virtually every statistical category in posting their first conference win of the season.
Coppin State (3-14, 0-2 MEAC) was limited to an -.022 hitting percentage and had only 21 kills for the match.
The Eagles also received four kills from Salena Weekly and 11 digs fromGabrielle Otero.
The Eagles held an early lead in the first set only to watch the Spartans roar back. Coppin State led 6-3 after a kill by Kristine Bindule, but Norfolk State responded with a 9-0 run to take a 12-6 lead.
The Eagles trimmed the lead to 15-11, but Norfolk State outscored Coppin State 10-4 during the remainder of the set.
Norfolk State used a late run to secure the win in the second set. The Spartans held a slim 15-14 lead until ripping off an 8-0 run to take a 23-14 lead and cruised to a 25-16 second-set victory.
The Spartans again benefitted from a huge run to take control of the third set. Leading 6-5, Norfolk State used a 10-1 run to take a 16-6 lead.
The Eagles rallied to within 18-12, but two kills by Ferreira helped the Spartans close out the third set 25-14.
