TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State junior guard
Sterling Smith led four players in double figures with a season-high 16 points during an 84-76 setback to Towson in a men's basketball non-conference contest at SECU Arena Wednesday night.
In addition to making 6-of-12 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, Smith led the Eagles in rebounding (six) and steals (two).
Also reaching double figures for Coppin State (1-5 overall) was sophomore guard
Van Rolle, who finished with a career-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting,
Dallas Gary (scored a season-high 12 points) and
Taariq Cephas (10 points).
One unique highlight during the game was
Christian Kessee converting a four-point play for the second consecutive game. He had a four-point play against Goldey-Beacom on Monday night.
Meanwhile Towson was led by John Davis, who posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 points. The Tigers also got 14 points from Alex Gavrilovic and 12 from Mike Morsell. Towson enjoyed a 49-32 rebounding advantage. Towson also attempted 47 free throws while Coppin State took 16 foul shots.
Coppin State led 23-20 with nine minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the first half following a pair of Gary foul shots. Towson closed the half by scoring 18 of the final 28 points to grab a 38-33 halftime edge. Davis scored 18 points in the opening half.
The Eagles were within four points early in the second half before the Tigers took control of the contest with a 16-2 run. Despite the large deficit, Coppin State battled back late and never quit.
This game marked the beginning of a busy stretch for Coppin State as it will play four games in a seven day period in different arenas. The Eagles will continue their road trip when they open conference play Saturday night at Hampton University. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
