ATHENS, Ga. – The Coppin State women's basketball team fell to No. 19 Georgia, 49-29, in a non-conference contest at Stegeman Coliseum Tuesday night.
Jordan Swails led the team with six points and four rebounds.
Keena Samuels added five points and three rebounds.
Amber Griffin notched four points and four assists.
Janelle Lane and
Bria Harris tallied four points and five rebounds apiece.
Coppin State (1-5 overall) trailed, 20-14, at intermission thanks to a strong defensive effort that limited the Lady Bulldogs (8-0) to 21 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The difference in the game was the foul line as Georgia attempted 31 free throws to Coppin State's six. Two Georgia players attempted more foul shots than Coppin State did as a team.
The Eagles held the Lady Bulldogs below 50 points, the fewest allowed by Coppin State this year. The 49 points were also a season-low point total for Georgia, which was picked sixth in the SEC preseason coaches' poll. For the game, Coppin State held Georgia to 26 percent shooting from the field.
In their last two games, the Eagles have permitted an average of 52.5 points. For the season, Coppin State has held three teams below 40 percent shooting, including its last two opponents.
Coppin State is back in action Saturday afternoon when it visits West Virginia at 4 p.m.
