DENVER –
Arnold Fripp scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds during Coppin State's 80-54 loss to the University of Denver at Magness Arena in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday.
It was the third time on the Eagles' season-opening four-game road trip that Fripp reached double digits and led the team in scoring. He is averaging a team-best 14 points. He was 7-of-10 from the field against the Pioneers and made all three of his 3-point shot attempts. Fripp has 13 career double-figure scoring games in his Coppin State career.
Taariq Cephas made four-of-eight shots from the field to finish with nine points.
Daquan Brickhouse and
Christian Kessee added seven points for the Eagles.
Coppin State had a pair of two point leads early in the game at 9-7 and 11-9. Despite trailing 34-23 at intermission, Brickhouse made a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles to within 35-30 with 17 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in the contest. That would be as close as the Eagles would get.
Picked to finish second in the Summitt League preseason poll, Denver had five players reach double figures highlighted by Brett Olsen's 14 points.
The Eagles will enjoy a week off from competition before playing their home opener on Monday, Dec. 1 against Division II Goldey-Beacom College at 7:30 p.m. That game is a "Blue Out" and all fans are encouraged to wear blue.
