Worley, Lawrence Help Women’s Hoops Pull Away from Bryant in Fourth Quarter

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Cire Worley scored a career-high 22 points and Laila Lawrence posted her tenth double-double of the season as Coppin State's women's basketball team pulled away for a 69-52 victory over Bryant at the FDU Christmas Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Winners of seven of their last ten, the Eagles improved to 9-6 on the year while the Bulldogs fell to 7-5.

  • Worley led all scorers by hitting 9-of-14 from the floor with three 3-pointers along with a free throw, surpassing the 15 points she had against Kent State nine days ago.  She also grabbed a season-high seven rebounds.
  • Lawrence made 7-of-12 shots from the field, including a pair of threes, and pulled down a season-high 19 rebounds to go with three assists and three steals.
  • Tyler Gray also finished in double figures with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, a block and two steals.
  • Tiffany Hammond and Angel Jones also chipped in with nine points apiece as the Eagles outshot Bryant, 48.2% to 33.3%.
  • Coppin also outrebounded the Bulldogs, 42 to 32, and outscored Bryant, 19-8 in the fourth quarter.
How it Happened
  • Coppin scored the first five points of the game and opened the contest on a 12-2 run over the first 5:34.
  • Bryant was able to climb back into the game, cutting the deficit after the first to 19-17.
  • Early threes by Lawrence and Worley in the second kept Coppin on top and the Eagles closed the half on an 8-0 run, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 6:37.
  • Hammond opened the third with a three and Gray also hit a jumper before Bryant stopped their drought of 8:13 without a point.
  • Once again, Bryant was able to make a game of it, pulling to within 40-39 at the 4:23 mark before Lawrence stopped the spurt with a three.
  • Worley added another three and Lawrence added a pair of layups to put Coppin on top 50-44 going into the fourth.
  • Worley had five early points to start the fourth, extending Coppin's lead into double digits and a late 10-0 run by the Eagles sealed the win.
