Baseball Allows Eight Runs in the First in Loss at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team was unable to recover from an eight-run first inning by Norfolk State in a 21-2 loss to the Spartans on Friday at Marty Miller Field.  The Eagles fell to 4-21 overall and 4-10 in the NEC while NSU moved to 12-16 on the year and 9-5 in league play.

Jordan Treadwell had two of Coppin's six hits, recording a pair of doubles while scoring and driving in a run. Kenan Harvey also drove in a run as Terrell Miller had a base hit and a walk. Dillon Kirksey was charged with just five earned runs over the first four innings before Jack Joyce retired a batter and Nick Dolbin fanned three while throwing a scoreless 1.2 innings.

Norfolk recorded seven hits and also took advantage of two CSU errors to erupt for eight runs in the first. Treadwell and Harvey got one of the runs back in the third on back-to-back doubles to start the second before the Spartans tacked on three more in the bottom half with three more hits and another Eagles defensive miscue.

Treadwell had another RBI double in the third, which was equaled by Norfolk, and the hosts added another in the fourth and eight more in the fifth.

Dolbin relieved Joyce with one-out in the bottom of the fifth and retired two of the next three.  He struck out the first two batters in the sixth, and following an infield since, got another groundout to retire the side.

The conference rivals will finish their series at 12 pm on Saturday, April 4.
