HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team doubled up Central Connecticut State, 10-5, in an NEC victory on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles moved to 6-23 overall and 6-11 in the NEC while the Blue Devils fell to 9-15 on the year and 7-10 in league play.
The win also gave head coach
Sherman Reed the 200
th victory of his career.
Noah Hogan and
Terrell Milliner both had a pair of hits and scored two runs each with Hogan also driving two runs.
Jordan Treadwell scored three runs on a hit and two walks while
Angel Garcia drove in four runs.
Dillon Kirksey got the win on the mound, allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings.
Justin Ritz picked up the save, throwing the final 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three.
Garcia gave the Eagles the lead with a two-run single in the first, driving in both Hogan and Treadwell. A double by
Armando (AJ) Hurtado in the third scored Treadwell while Hogan's double in the fourth plated
Marcus Sanders to give Coppin a 4-0 lead.
CCSU cut the lead to 4-3 with a three-run sixth, but the Eagles erupted for five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 9-3. Hogan reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Milliner from third after he doubled down the line and got to third on an infield single by Sanders. Hogan later scored on a wild pitch before Treadwell crossed home on a groundout by Garcia.
Hurtado scored easily from third later in the inning as
Pedro Agosto went opposite field for a triple and
Nelson Grajales followed with a single to drive him in as well. Garcia drew a walk with the bases loaded in the seventh to make it a 10-3 score.
Ritz stranded a pair of Blue Devils in the eighth, but the guests threatened with two runs in the ninth before the side was retired.
Coppin will look to win the series with a 12 pm first pitch on Sunday, April 12 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
