Softball Drops MEAC Twinbill to SC State in Home Opener

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of MEAC games to South Carolina State in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex.  The Bulldogs, who improved to 8-8 overall and 5-0 in the MEAC, took the opener, 6-3, and won the nightcap, 9-3, while the Eagles fell to 1-12 on the season and 0-5 in league play.

Game 1: SC State def. Coppin State, 6-3

Aniyah Haley had half of Coppin's six hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and two steals while Emily Quintero, Brooklyn Lee-Scott and Cameran Corbett had the other base knocks. Julianna Mejia, Lee-Scott and Brooklyn Tapusoa were credited with RBIs.

Lee-Scott also tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out four.

SC State got on the board with a run in the first and remained on top until Coppin tied the score with a run in the third on a sac fly to right by Mejia.  Corbett scored on the flyout after singling and advancing to third on a double by Haley.

After a scoreless fourth, the Bulldogs put four runs across with a pair of hits and a costly throwing error along with two walks. SC State tacked on another run in the seventh to go up, 6-1, and Coppin managed just two runs in its final at-bat on an RBI triple by Scott followed by a sac fly from Tapusoa.

Game 2: SC State def. Coppin State, 9-3

Coppin recorded just four hits in the nightcap as South Carolina State struck for two runs in each of the first two innings before taking a 9-0 lead after its half of the sixth.

The Eagles got on the board with three runs in the sixth in large part due to four Bulldogs errors. Xzylia Maravilla reached on an error to start the inning but was forced out at third following a walk and a sharp-line drive to center off the bat of Aniyah Haley. After a flyout, a throwing error allowed Cameran Corbett and Haley to get into scoring position, and another error led to Corbett scoring the team's first run.

Leslie Sereno followed with a single to center, driving in Haley, and Giselle Ulloa crossed home following the guest's fourth error of the inning.

Debra Hyde received the loss for Coppin, allowing five runs on ten hits in 4.0 innings before Emily Quintero gave up three runs in the final 3.0 innings while striking out three.
