HANOVER, Md. - Despite allowing just one hit over the first nine innings, Coppin State's baseball team fell to Maryland Eastern Shore, 7-4, on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 2-14 overall while the Hawks moved to 3-15 on the year and both teams are 2-5 in the NEC.
Pedro Agosto was the only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk while
Armando (AJ) Hurtado had a three-run home run along with a walk.
Nelson Grajales and
Angel Garcia also tallied base hits, and
Noah Hogan drew three walks.
Jake Cumming gave up one earned run on no hits while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work.
Luke Corcoran allowed just one run on one hit in the next 3.2 innings before
Justin Ritz was charged with one earned run on two hits over the final 1.1 innings despite striking out three. The trio combined to walk nine batters while hitting two more, but the defense committed four errors.
A fielding error on the first play of the game along with three walks and a hit batter allowed UMES to take a quick 2-0 lead and the Hawks added another run in the top of the third without a base hit.
Coppin struck for four runs in the bottom half of the third with Agosto driving in Hogan from second on a double to dead center, just over the reach of the outfielder. Hurtado followed up with his second home run of the season to left field.
Cumming got a 1-2-3 fourth and stranded a pair of runners in the fifth before the Hawks got their first hit of game in the sixth off Corcoran, leading to a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four.
CSU left five runners stranded over the next four innings and the guests put together a pair of hits and got help for a pair of Eagles errors to score three in the tenth.
The same two teams will meet at 1:00 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium on Saturday, March 21, followed by a 1 pm start on Sunday, March 22.
