BALTIMORE – Sydney Burris scored a team-high 14 points as the Coppin State women's basketball team fell to Norfolk State, 73-34, in its final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 9-21 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC while the Spartans improved to 16-12 on the year and 11-2 in league play.
Prior to the game, Coppin honored Burris and its five other seniors:
Skylar Barnes, Jahcelyn Hartfield, Paris McBride, Khila Morris and
Patricia Sosa Lora.
In her final collegiate home game, Burris was the lone bright spot for CSU offensively, hitting 4-of-7 from the floor and all six of her free throws. Burris also grabbed four rebounds to go with an assist and a block.
The rest of the Eagles combined for just 20 points while
Shanaii Gamble led the team with nine rebounds. McBride dished out four assists, Sosa Lora blocked two shots, and Morris added a pair of steals.
After shooting 54.5% from the field and leading 16-12 after the first quarter, Coppin went ice cold the rest of the game, combining to shoot just 7-of-42 (16.7%) in the final three quarters.
Following
Erin Henry's bucket in the closing seconds of the first quarter, Norfolk State went on a 21-2 run over the final 8:58 of the first half and never looked back.
Coppin closes the regular season at Morgan State on Thursday, March 5 at 5:30 pm before playing in the MEAC Quarterfinals at 12 pm on Thursday, March 12 at Norfolk Scope Arena.
