BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team just 23.8% from the floor in a 58-47 MEAC loss to South Carolina State on Thursday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 3-14 overall while the Bulldogs moved to 4-13 with both teams standing at 1-1 in conference play.
Khila Morris led Coppin with 11 points, followed by
Skylar Barnes with ten and
Erin Henry with seven.
Shanaii Gamble led all players with 11 rebounds as the Eagles made just 4-of-24 shots from deep and 13-of-24 (54.2%) from the line.
SC State made 50 percent of its shots in the second half and 41.2% for the game.
South Carolina State led from nearly start to finish, opening the game with a free throw before a tip-in by Gamble just over a minute into the game. The Bulldogs answered with a quick three which started an 11-0 run over the next four-plus minutes.
Coppin was able to tie the score at 25 with just 39 seconds remaining in the first half following a transition 3-pointer by Henry. The Bulldogs were able to capitalize on an offense rebound at the other end and nailed a free throw just before halftime to go on top 28-25 at the break.
The teams played nearly even in the third, but the Bulldogs scored the first 12 points of the fourth as Coppin missed its first ten shots of the period. Henry stopped the drought with a layup in transition with three minutes left to play as South Carolina State came away with the victory.
