Women’s Hoops Falls to First Place Maryland Eastern Shore in Overtime

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coppin State's women's basketball team rallied to send the game into overtime but ultimately fell at first-place Maryland Eastern Shore, 68-61 on Thursday night at Hytche Center.  The Eagles fell to 4-15 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC while the Hawks improved to 11-10 on the year and a perfect 4-0 in league play.

Midway through the third quarter, Coppin trailed by 12 before using a 12-3 run to pull within three in the final minute of the period.  The Hawks responded with a pair of jumpers to extend the lead back to 46-39 entering the fourth.

CSU quickly diminished the deficit and took a 53-52 lead following six-straight points from Sydney Burris and Skylar Barnes at the 4:22 mark. The Eagles extended their lead to three a couple times in the final minutes of regulation but the Hawks were up to the task and matched a Paris McBride three with seconds left with one of their own just 12 seconds later.

Coppin's last-second attempt to win in regulation was off the mark and UMES took advantage in the extra session, holding Coppin to 0-of-11 shooting while making a field goal and going 5-of-8 from the line.

Khila Morris led three Eagles in double figures with 14 points, followed by Burris with 12 points and Barnes with 11.  McBride added nine points while making all six of her free throws.  Erin Henry produced seven points and six rebounds while Shanaii Gamble grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Hawks outshot Coppin, 38.7% to 31.7% as both teams struggled to take care of the ball and combined for 55 turnovers.  Ashanti Lynch had a game-high 28 points and 15 rebounds for UMES while hitting 11-of-12 free throws.
