Baseball Falls in NEC Series Finale to Stonehill

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped its Northeast Conference series finale to Stonehill, 13-2 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles now stand at 14-29 overall and 12-12 in the NEC while the Skyhawks improved to 18-25 on the year and 16-8 in league play.

Anthony Divittorio went 3-for-3 while also being hit by a pitch, but the Eagles had just three other hits coming from Gavin Grutzmacher, Daniel Moore and Jayden Asencio. Grutzmacher scored both of Coppin's runs while Moore and Indy Anderson drove in runs.

Kaden Straily was charged with 11 earned runs on 4.2 innings before Brandon Stephens threw the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run with four strikeouts.

Moore put Coppin on top, 1-0 with an RBI groundout in the first, driving in Grutzmacher who walked and got to third following Divittorio's single and a wild pitch.

Stonehill scored in each of the next four innings for 11 runs before Stephens fanned a pair of Skyhawks in the sixth, holding the guests scoreless. The visitors added two more runs in the seventh, extending their lead to 13-1.

Grutzmacher, Divittorio and Moore started the seventh with three-straight singles to load the bases. Anderson then flew out to center field for a sacrifice fly, and after Asencio drew a walk, the next two Eagles were retired.

The Eagles return to action on May 9-11 at LIU for a three-game NEC series. Coppin is four games behind Stonehill for the final Conference Tournament spot with six games to play. Le Moyne also trails the Skyhawks by just one game.
