Softball Drops Pair of Games at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at Norfolk State on Friday afternoon, dropping the Eagles to 3-24 overall and 3-14 in the MEAC.  The Spartans took game one, 9-0, before topping Coppin, 9-1 in game two.

Julianna Mejia tallied the only hit from Coppin in the opener while Brooklyn Tapusoa also drew a walk.  Tatjana Harris took the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in the complete game.

Norfolk scored three runs in the bottom of the first, which was all it needed, before adding a run in the second in five in the third. Harris threw a 1-2-3 fourth to keep Coppin alive but the Eagles went down in order in the fifth.

Both of Coppin's hits in game two came in the first inning with Mejia recording a one-out single before scoring all the way from first on a two-out double by Xzylia Maravilla.

Norfolk got the run right back in the bottom of the first before scoring one in the second and four in the third to take a 6-1 lead.

Harris threw a scoreless fourth and a 1-2-3 fifth before the Spartans scored three runs in the sixth to seal it.

Harris threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while Debra Hyde gave up back-to-back home runs and a walk in relief during the third inning.

The Eagles will wrap up their series against the Spartans at 2 pm on Saturday, April 19, in a nationally televised broadcast on ESPNU.
