Straily Nearly Perfect in Baseball’s 2-0 Victory Over Norfolk State

HANOVER, Md. – Kaden Straily threw a complete game shutout, leading the Coppin State baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles (10-22, 8-7 NEC) completed a three-game sweep of the Spartans and have won six-straight Northeast Conference games.

A sophomore from Henderson, Nev., Straily (3-5) threw his first complete game, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-high six batters. Straily forced 13 groundouts, retired the final 20 batters that he faced and did not allow a runner into scoring position.

This is the second time this season that Straily has been part of a CSU shutout this season as he threw seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Mercyhurst on March 9.

The game remained scoreless through the first five innings before the Eagles got on the board in the sixth. Indy Anderson was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to third following a walk by Jayden Asencio and a single by Gabe Breckenridge. Bryce Thompson then drew a walk with the bases loaded, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

After Straily got a 1-2-3 seventh inning, his fourth-straight inning where he retired the side in order, Coppin added another run in the bottom half. Daniel Moore drew a two-out walk, and following a Spartans error, Asencio singled through the right side to score Moore.

Straily fanned one in the eighth and froze NSU leadoff hitter Jalan Jones for the final out of the game.

The Eagles had just four hits but took advantage of five walks and three Norfolk State errors.

Coppin returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 when it hosts Richmond in a 3 pm start at Joe Cannon Stadium.
