TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team trailed, just 4-3 after the top of the third but Towson University pulled away to defeat the Eagles, 19-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. The loss drops Coppin's record to 4-22 on the year while the Tigers improved to 10-19.
Pranav Sundar had two of Coppin's sixbase hits, including a double, while
Anthony Divittorio, Indy Anderson and
Bryce Thompson all drove in runs.
Jayden Clark also reached safely twice with a base hit and a walk and scored a run.
Jobe Olson gave up four runs over the first 2.0 innings before
Reagan Rivera allowed five runs in the third.
Isaiah Licorish threw the next 2.0 innings, matching Olson with three strikeouts before
Brandon Stephens and
Justin Ritz were charged with three runs apiece in their innings of work.
Towson got on the board on a wild pitch in the first before Thompson tied the score at one with a single to left, driving in Sundar who doubled earlier in the inning. The Tigers answered with a three-run bottom half.
Coppin put together four hits to score a pair of runs in its half of the third, starting with a single from both Clark and
Gavin Grutzmacher reached on an error. After a wild pitch advanced both into scoring position, Anderson hit a deep fly ball to right, bringing home Clark. After a fielder's choice, Sundar and Divittorio delivered back-to-back singles to score
Daniel Moore.
The Tigers scored eight times in their half of the third and added seven more runs before the game was called after seven innings.
CSU takes on Maryland Eastern Shore in a three-game NEC series on April 4-6 at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles will be the visiting team for all three games despite playing at their home facility.
