BALTIMORE – Laila Lawrence led all players with 18 points and nine rebounds but it was not enough as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell to Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-56, on Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 17-12 overall and 8-5 in the MEAC while the Hawks improved to 12-16 on the year and 7-6 in league play.

- Lawrence made 8-of-16 from the floor and a pair of 3-pointers and finished just a rebound shy of a double-double. She added two assists and a pair of steals as well.
- Angel Jones was the only other Eagles player in double figures with 12 points along with a team-high four assists.
- Cire Worley and Niyah Gaston had eight points apiece, followed by Tiffany Hammond with six.
- Coppin outshot UMES, 43.5% to 39.6% but were outrebounded, 36-25, and the Hawks recorded 21 points off 20 CSU turnovers.
- Maryland Eastern Shore also made 20-of-24 free throws compared to just 10-of-18 for the Eagles.

How it Happened
- The first quarter went back and forth with Hammond breaking a tie with a jumper with a minute left, giving Coppin a 15-13 lead.
- Lawrence scored five points early in the second, extending Coppin's lead to 21-13, and Worley hit a three just over a minute later to put the Eagles up by double figures.
- Maryland Eastern Shore answered with a 14-2 run to retake the lead at 28-26 with 2:27 left in the half before McTeer tied the score with a layup.
- The Hawks hit a free throw to take a one-point lead at the half, but the Eagles embarked on a 14-2 run midway through the third to go back up, 46-37 at the 3:18 mark.
- Gaston hit a late three following a UMES run, which was then answered by the Hawks to make it a 49-43 CSU advantage after three.
- Worley opened the fourth quarter with a layup, but the Hawks scored the next ten points to retake the lead.
- Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga hit the back end of two free throws to get the deficit to just 53-52 with 4:54 left in regulation but UMES held off the Eagles the rest of the way.
