BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped its MEAC series finale to North Carolina Central, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex. Coppin fell to 3-16 overall and 3-6 in the MEAC while NC Central moved to 7-26 on the year and 4-5 in league play.
Emily Quintero,
Leslie Sereno and
Xzylia Maravilla had one hit apiece for Coppin while
Giselle Ulloa and
Natasha Arroyo drew walks.
Tatjana Harris gave up five runs over the first 1.0 inning before Quintero relieved her and gave up two earned runs over the final 4.0 innings.
NC Central scored two in the first and three in the second before Quintero tossed a scoreless third. The big blow for Central came in the third as they had runners on second and third with nobody out.
A grounder was fielded by the pitcher, Quintero, who caught the baserunner at third in a pickle. The runner wound up safe at third, and while the infield chased the other runner back to second, an errant throw into the outfield allowed all three runs to score to make it an 8-0 score.
Coppin failed to take advantage of an error in the fourth and Central tacked on two more runs in the fifth.
CSU travels to South Carolina State for a pivotal three-game MEAC series on April 5-6. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
