WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Khila Morris scored a game-high 19 points and
Erin Henry added a career-high 17 points, but the Coppin State women's basketball team fell at William & Mary, 72-65, on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. The Eagles fell to 2-10 on the season while the Tribe improved to 5-4.
Morris made 7-of-15 shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range to lead all scorers. The senior from Bronx, N.Y., added four rebounds, four assists, a block and four steals. Henry was also efficient from the field, hitting 7-of-13 field goals to go with three 3-pointers, three assists and two steals.
Patricia Sosa Lora also finished in double figures with ten, followed by
Paris McBride who tallied six points, four rebounds, eight assists, a block and a steal.
Shanaii Gamble was credited with a team-high five rebounds to go with her five points.
William & Mary outshot Coppin, 50.0% to 46.4% and despite the Eagles making ten 3-pointers to the Tribe's two, the hosts made 12 free throws compared to just three for the Eagles. Natalie Fox led four players in double figures with 18 points for William & Mary.
The teams were tied at 17 after the first quarter, before William & Mary went on a late 20-4 run in the second to go up 39-27 with 11 seconds left in the half. Morris made a steal in the closing seconds and nailed a three as time expired to make it a nine-point deficit at the half.
A three by William & Mary increased the lead back to 12, and Coppin got no closer than 42-37 with 6:33 left in the third after another three by Morris before the Tribe extended the lead once again.
With just over five minutes left in regulation, Fox answered a Morris three with a jumper for William & Mary to make it a 62-51 score. After a free throw by Morris, Henry recorded a layup and back-to-back threes to make it a 62-60 deficit at the 2:28 mark.
Both teams traded baskets before a three-point play by the Tribe, followed by another layup nearly sealed it. Henry connected on another three to make a five-point game with nine seconds left before a pair of free throws clinched the win for the Green & Gold.
