BALTIMORE – Led by
Khila Morris, Coppin State's women's basketball put together an impressive, 80-47 victory over Lincoln University on Thursday afternoon at PEC Arena. The win was the first for head coach
Darrell Mosley in his short time at the helm of the Eagles program.
A senior from Bronx, Morris stuffed the stat sheet, leading all players with 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals while also dishing out three assists. Morris hit 6-of-11 from the floor with a career-high three 3-pointers. Her eight rebounds and five steals both matched a career high.
Sydney Burris and
Kyley Gary-Grayson also finished in double figures, combining for 21 points, followed by
Erin Henry and
Skylar Barnes with nine points apiece. All 12 players that dressed for Coppin had significant contributions with senior
Jahcelyn Hartfield adding seven points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, all of which were career highs.
Also finding the bottom of the net for CSU were
Shanaii Gamble with seven points, freshmen
Princess Nwachukwu and
Kylie Wells with four and three points, respectively.
Mickelle Lowry and
Jordyn Adderly also added field goals while
Paris McBride dished out four assists and added two steals.
Coppin shot 39.1% from the floor with 19 assists on 27 field goals and forced the Lions into 33 turnovers which led to 38 points. The Eagles were credited with 22 steals which were their most since tallying 28 in a win over Cheyney on November 9, 2012.
How it Happened
- The game opened evenly with Lincoln grabbing an early lead with Coppin matching the Lions blow for blow. Coppin closed the quarter strongly to erase an early deficit to tie it at 14.
- Coppin opened the second with a string of early baskets while tightening up the defense, using a 13-0 run which was capped off by a transition layup and three by Morris.
- Burris went to work with a couple nifty post moves and Wells closed the period with a pair of free throws to put CSU up 36-23 at the half.
- CSU doubled up Lincoln in the third quarter and scored nine-straight points to extend the lead to as many as 54-30 following an old-fashioned three-point play by Gary-Grayson.
- Following a Lions basket, Nwachukwu put back a miss as time expired, making it a 56-33 game after three.
- Another 9-0 run by the Eagles early in the fourth put the game out of reach as Hartfield added another three-point play with 6:56 remaining.
