WASHINGTON, D.C. – Angel Jones led all players with 22 points, but Coppin State's women's basketball team was unable to hang on at Howard, falling to the Bison, 76-71 on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.  The Eagles fell to 11-9 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC while Howard moved to 10-8 on the year and 3-0 in league play.

  • Jones hit 8-of-19 shots from the floor with a pair of threes but scored just three points in the second half. She added a pair of assists and five steals.
  • Four other Eagles reached double figures with Tiffany Hammond and Cire Worley scoring 12 points apiece, followed by Laila Lawrence and Tyler Gray with ten points each.
  • Lawrence led all players with nine rebounds while Gray was second to her with seven to go with five assists and six steals.
  • All of Hammond's points came on four 3-pointers and she now has 95 threes in her one-plus years at Coppin.
  • Howard also put five players in double figures and outshot Coppin, 56.0% to 40.7%, but the Eagles hit nine shots from behind-the-arc compared to just two for the Bison.
How it Happened
  • Howard scored the opening basket of the game but Coppin ran off the next nine points with Jones hitting a three along with a jumper, and Lawrence adding a pair of layups.
  • Coppin extended the lead to as many as 16-6 with 2:17 left before Howard closed the period with a three just seconds later.
  • The Eagles remained in control during the second quarter, allowing their lead to only drop to nine while extending it to as many as 14 on a late three by Hammond.
  • Howard pulled to within 37-25 with a jumper just before the half and that margin remained after the third as well.
  • After trading buckets to start the fourth, Howard scored 16 straight points, taking its first lead since the opening basket of the game.
  • Jones stopped the scoreless drought with a layup with 3:03 remaining but Coppin was unable to pull closer than that four-point deficit.
  • Howard made 8-of-8 free throws in the final 2:50 after shooting 10-of-20 from the line prior to that time.
Up Next: Coppin will be off for 11 days before traveling across town to play Morgan State in a 2 pm start on Saturday, January 25.
