Baseball Season Comes to End With Pair of Losses to LIU

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team's season came to an end with a pair of Northeast Conference losses to LIU on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles finished with a 12-33 overall record while going 11-21 in the NEC after dropping game one, 9-4, and the nightcap, 8-1.

Game 1: LIU def. Coppin State, 9-4

Samuel Nieves had a pair of hits while driving in a run as Chris Marte had a pair of RBI along with a double and a walk. Anthony Divittorio scored twice and went 1-for-4 with a walk.

Alek Elges allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out three in 6.0 innings of work. Christian Pareja went the final 3.0 innings and gave up one run on four hits while also striking out three.

LIU got off to a quick start with a four-run first inning, but Damon Gaither got one of the runs back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half, driving in Divittorio who drew a walk to lead off the inning.

Elges held the Sharks scoreless until the fifth when LIU hit back-to-back solo home runs, but once again the Eagles battled back, scoring three runs to pull within, 6-4. Brody Black started the fifth with a walk and got to second on a single by Divittorio. Nieves drove in Black with a single through the left side before Marte laced a shot down the left field line for a two-run double.

The Sharks extended the lead to three with a run in the sixth and added two more in the ninth as the Eagles managed just one baserunner over the final four innings.

Game 2: LIU def. Coppin State, 8-1

Anthony Divittorio led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, but that was the only run Coppin scored on the day. Four other Eagles had a base hit which included a double by Kai Holm, while Chris Marte drew three walks.

Nico Felber gave up five runs in the first 5.1 innings while Clay Thompson was charged with a run over the next 1.2 innings. John Neeld held the Sharks scoreless over the next 1.2 innings before Justin Ritz forced a groundout for the final out.

LIU scored a run in its first at-bat which Divittorio matched with a solo shot over the fence in right field on a full count.  The Sharks came right back with two in the second before adding two in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

The Sharks tacked on another run in the eighth to put the game away.
