EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 17-5, Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at ET Straw Family Stadium. The Eagles fell to 12-30 on the year while The Mount moved to 18-31-1.
Kai Holm had Coppin's only hit while also scoring and driving in a run .
Jayden Asencio and
Victor Alongi both drew a pair of walks while four others reached base on balls.
Giovanni Canales allowed six runs over the first 3.2 innings, followed by
Brandon Stephens and
Jackson Montgomery who gave up a combined 11 runs over the next 1.2 innings.
Justin Ritz struck out two batters while issuing just one hit.
The Eagles scored four runs in the top of the first with Holm scoring the first run of the game on a balk after doubling and advancing to third on a walk. Asencio came around to score just after on a wild pitch.
Liam McCallum lined out to center field, but deep enough to score Brody
Black from third, and
Damon Gaither crossed home on another wild pitch with
Gabe Breckenridge at the plate.
Canales held the Mountaineers to just one run in the bottom half but the hosts took the lead, 5-4, with a four-run second inning despite recording just one hit. Canales also threw a scoreless third.
Holm tied the score at five with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, bringing home Breckenridge who was plunked to start the inning.
Braylon Watson and Alongi drew walks just after Breckenridge which prompted a pitching change.
The Mount retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth before scoring six in the fifth and five in the sixth to reach a run-rule. CSU went down in order in the seventh.
Coppin closes out the season when it hosts LIU for a three-game series on May 16-18. Thursday's game is set for 3 pm, followed by 1 pm on Friday and 12 pm on Sunday for Senior Day.
