Softball’s Historic Season Ends with Loss in MEAC Championship Game

NORFOLK, Va. – A historic season by the Coppin State softball team came to an end as the Eagles dropped a pair of game to No. 1 Morgan State in the MEAC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles (23-22) dropped game one, 5-1, and the nightcap, 6-0.
 
Following the conclusion of game two, Vanessa Carrizosa, Seryna Esparza and Aniyah Haley were named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Game 1: Morgan State def. Coppin State, 5-1
 
Five different Eagles had base hits with Seryna Esparza recording the team's only extra-base hit. Giselle Ulloa had an RBI while Celeste Gonzales scored the team's only run.
 
Vanessa Carrizosa was charged with five earned runs on nine hits while striking out two in 5.0 innings of work.  Emily Quintero gave up just one hit over the final 2.0 innings.
 
Morgan State scored a run in each of the first three innings before Coppin got on the board in the fourth. Gonzales led off the inning with a single, got to second on a sac bunt by Manaia Fonoti and third on a wild pitch. Ulloa drove in Gonzales as she reached on a fielder's choice.
 
The Bears came right back with two runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead and Coppin left a runner stranded in both the sixth and seventh.
 
Game 2: Morgan State def. Coppin State, 6-0
 
Celeste Gonzales had the team's only hit while Emily Quintero gave up five runs on nine hits over the first 4.1 innings. Vanessa Carrizoza allowed a run over the final 1.2 innings.
 
Morgan State struck quickly for a run in the first before Quintero held the Bears in check over the next three innings.  The Bears put a five spot on the board in the fifth, which included a grand slam off Carrizosa who came in as a relief pitcher with the bases loaded.
 
Carrizosa faced the minimum in the sixth which included an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
 
Gonzales got a one-out single in the seventh and got to second on a throwing error by the outfielder, but the final two batters were retired.
