ARLINGTON, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference tilt at George Washington University, 12-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park. The Eagles fell to 6-19 overall while GW moved to 20-12.
Daniel Moore had a pair of hits, including a double and scored two runs while
Anthony Divittorio drove in a pair of runs.
Samuel Nieves, Jayden Asencio, Chris Marte and
Brett Griggs also had hits for Coppin with Marte drawing a pair of walks and scoring twice.
Bryce Thompson walked a pair of times and drove in a run and
Victor Alongi had a pair of RBIs and scored a run.
On the mound,
Giovanni Canales took the loss, allowing seven earned runs over the first 5.0 innings while striking out three.
Christian Pareja gave up two runs over the next 2.0 innings and
Justin Ritz was charged with two more runs in his lone inning of work.
GW struck quickly with four runs in the first, but the Eagles matched them with four in the second. Asencio and Moore had back-to-back one-out singles before Marte drew a walk to load the bases. Thompson drove in the first run with a walk before Alongi got another to score with a groundout. Divittorio found a hole in center field to score a pair of runs and tie the score at four.
Canales gave up just a single in the bottom of the second but the Buff & Blue regained the lead with two runs in the third. Coppin gave him the lead with three runs in the fourth as Alongi was credited with an RBI while reaching on an error. Two more runs came across when
Kai Holm reached on another error.
GW stranded a runner in the fourth but got the lead back with two runs in the fifth and the hosts added two more in the seventh and eighth for added insurance.
CSU stranded ten runners on base over the final five innings, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, and two each in the sixth, eighth and ninth.
The Eagles head to Norfolk State for a three-game NEC series on April 12-14 before closing out the long road trip with a trip to Towson on Wednesday, April 17.
